Au History:
Alex's history splits at a near literal coin flip on the beach in Cuba. When Erik offers the young mutants a chance to join him, Alex chose to go with him. He was unaware that Charles had been paralyzed. His decision to go with Erik made him a member of the Brotherhood, a decision based on a life of having his powers set him very much apart from the non!mutants in his life.
After joining the Brotherhood he became a key member of the group and worked hard at Erik's side to help recruit and train other new mutants while training with Erik as well. Erik taught him how to harness his anger to drive his powers to new heights of strength and more importantly control. He passed on Charles' training in the benefit of a touch of serenity and calm to the anger that burned inside him.
The more time Alex spent with the Brotherhood, the more he believed he had made the right choice. He and Raven grew closer as they both accepted their abilities with more confidence and no fear of hatred or shunning from their peers. They became the young leaders of the Brotherhood and led by example, setting the bar for the new recruits Erik pulled in.
His canon point is about 6 months after the beach. Alex is more in control of his powers than he has ever been, more confident in himself, and determined to never let himself be powerless again. He still refuses to drink or risk losing control, as it is the one thing he holds onto above all else.
In those six months, they have recruited an impressive 30 mutants to their cause, training and educating them and teaching them about the war that was going to come and how to survive and win it. Charles has opened up his school for the gifted and has also been amassing a fair number of students.
Alex still has doubts now and then about whether or not they are doing the right thing, but he has come to believe that there is a time for the right thing, and a time for the necessary thing. He believes that now is a time for the latter, rather than the former.
Previous Game History: n/a
Personality:
Alex is a very interesting character to pick apart. He's developed into a loner after an accident with his powers kills a man who abducted him and his sister and gets him thrown in jail. His powers are highly dangerous to everyone around him when uncontained and have left Alex with a conflicting dilemma. He feels as if he is weak without his abilities, but at the same time, he is extremely frustrated with his lack of control over those powers.
Joining up with the G-Men under Charles and Erik's guidance, Alex finally has the chance to meet other mutants like himself. At first he's clearly reluctant to use his powers, and while Alex is by no means shy, he still hangs back in most of the conversations other than a few passing comments. He's clearly not uncomfortable around them, despite his silence, as he laughs and jokes right along with them. Although he appears rather introverted, it is more likely that his time in solitary has left him unaccustomed to the interactions, as we see him become more vocal and friendly with the rest of the team as the movie progresses. He has a hard time associating with others and tends to keep his thoughts to himself most of the time by default. Keeping others at a distance is the easiest way to keep them safe from his powers, another reason he bottles away his emotions to deal with at a later time. It's clear by the way he reacts to the other young mutants goading that he's unwilling to use his power around them, but he caves to their insistence and when their reactions are ones of awe and amazement, rather than fear, he relaxes visibly around them and actually begins to join in more, even offering to make the others drinks to celebrate. (An instance where we see more of his fear and responsibility toward his powers when he refrains from drinking, himself. Worried he could lose control)
Loner attitude or not, Alex doesn't hesitate more than a few short seconds to help his new found friends when danger strikes. This comes back to bite him in a bad way when the energy from his blast is used to kill Darwin. The incident further strengthens Alex's belief that his powers cause bad things to happen, and he inwardly blames himself for Darwin's death and believes everyone else does as well. Alex is a quiet person when it comes to anything personal and bottles up his emotions and regrets to be released explosively either literally or figuratively, when something triggers him. His guilt comes to such a climax when Charles makes an ill-phrased comment out of frustration regarding the danger of Alex's powers and pointing out that he could get one of his teammates killed. Alex's adamant outburst against it being his fault only shows how much he really believes it was. He takes off immediately after, still further avoiding the issue. He bottles his emotions up like his powers, because becoming over emotional around others was what made him lash out with his powers before prison, to protect himself and his sister. His emotions can often be gleaned from his body language, however.
Control is what Alex seeks almost more than acceptance. He does not want his powers gone, as he feels he is nothing without them. He just wants to be able to control them completely so he doesn't have to worry about ever accidentally killing anyone else. While the guard at the prison claimed Alex enjoyed Solitary, it is far more likely he preferred it knowing he would not be a danger to anyone else if he was alone. Especially after his powers again had resulted in the deaths of two inmates in the prison.
He can be a bit insecure, not just about his powers, but his appearance as well. He teases and belittles Hank often during training. The better he becomes at controlling his powers, and the longer he is with the other mutants, the less biting and harsh his insults become, even occasionally being mixed in with compliments. Mainly, he doesn't want to feel inferior, and reacts aggressively when he does. He wants nothing more than to be in control, and out of that control lowers his self-esteem and causes him to lash out more and become impatient.
Despite his occasional dark and broody background, Alex is not all gray clouds and glass-half-empty thoughts. When he gets his first actual control over his powers thanks to the suit Hank designed, the excited joy he expresses at it is a remarkable change. Alex actually laughs and smiles, considering it one of the greatest moments of his life. He still finds the time to laugh and joke with the other mutants, and find some joy in what goes on around them. He builds up friendships with the other mutants. While it is a rare occasion for him to openly show it, when he is happy, the smiles light up his expressions. Every emotion Alex does choose to show is shown all the deeper for how rarely he does it. During the battle on the beach he fiercely protects his fellow mutants and fights alongside them, but even in battle he finds the time to be thrilled by his brief flight with Sean. He even manages to control his powers after the destruction of the disc enough to protect Banshee from Angel, clipping her wings with one of his rings.
In the end, when it comes to choosing between the path that Erik offers, and the one that Charles does, Alex has to choose between hope in the human race or following the only other mutant he feels is actually capable of understanding him.
The important thing to realize is that this au is not about a change in Alex's personality. He was always going to be stuck here in the middle. When it came down to choosing a side, it had been a virtual coin flip decision. In the original universe, Alex chose Charles because he decided that looking out for the rest of the other mutants his age he had grown to be friends with was more important. He wanted to believe that the world Charles spoke of could exist, and so he chose Hope.
In this alternate universe, Alex's decision simply swayed toward the opposite direction. Rather than seeing the hopeful future Charles promised, Alex watched those missiles approach and realized that as much as he wanted to believe in Charles' reality, it was an idealist's hopeful dream. Erik was a realist, and so was Alex. Alex felt a kinship with Erik, another mutant who knew how it felt to be powerless. What it was like to be looked at the way people had looked at Alex every time he lost control. He was terrified of being powerless again, and he saw in Erik the potential to learn that control. To get a hold on his powers and master them. Raven was another mutant who knew, better than Charles ever could, what it was like to need to hide as a result of his mutation. While hers was because of the physical aspects, his need to hide had been a hope of protecting others from his powers, as well as himself.
With Erik, Alex has gained a confidence that is different from the bravado he exhibited in the movie. This is a confidence that stems from control and training, as well as his new-found leadership potential. Although Alex still has regrets and doubts about some of Erik's plans, he ultimately believes he made the right decision. When the war is over, he is hopeful that Charles and the mutants who follow him will realize that this was what had to happen, and join them in their new-found freedom to be themselves.
Mutant and Proud.
Powers/Abilities:
Havok has the power to absorb cosmic energy and expel it as waves of heated energy (generally viewed as red rings or as a controlled beam when wearing the suit) capable of causing anything it hits to be destroyed or combust into flames and setting fire to everything they touch. Normally when he uses his powers, the rings travel in all directions and burn down everything around him, but he was later given a suit designed by Hank with a circular device in the center to charge his powers into a straight beam. He is immune to the adverse effects of most forms of radiation and heat. His powers are by no means limitless, and it takes about 16 hours for him to 'recharge' if he uses up all his energy.
He is still learning to control these powers, but thanks to his training with Erik, and the modified suit, he has been gaining that control. He can now direct his power without the suit, though it is difficult, and has learned how to channel the waves of energy through the specially designed gloves. His confidence affords him better control and his training with Erik has strengthened him, but he still has work to do.
Possessions:
Metal lined boots, a modified version of the suit Hank made him in the movie, now all black with red designs and gloves that help direct the waves of energy more efficiently and controlled.
Arrival: Ship
Reason for Playing: This game was recommended to me by Trace and it looked interesting. Alex is the only character I really feel comfortable with and I think he could be fun there.

Third person:
It was never that Alex liked solitary. It had been safer for everyone while he was in there. He couldn't hurt anyone if there was no one around to hurt. Alex knew all too well how dangerous his powers were. It was everyone else who seemed to miss that fact. He could remember each and every time he had used his powers with a clarity that he remembered few other things. He had caused death and destruction with horror at his own inability to control it. Letting his emotions get the better of him had become a weakness and a danger. It wasn't the only reason Alex had started bottling up his emotions and locking them away for the protection of himself and others, but it was one of the larger reasons.
The first time he had killed someone with his powers, before the horror of his actions fully settled in, he had felt something far more terrifying than guilt. Relief had washed over him before anything else. A bad man was dead. He deserved it. He had deserved to die. Then that moment was gone as realization washed over him and threatened to drown him. He had murdered someone. He wasn't even entirely sure how he had done it, but he had, and he knew it, the police knew it, everyone knew it.
The second time, he had tried to warn them. He really had. He told his fellow inmates to leave him alone, that he didn't want to hurt them. He was dangerous. They had laughed and could he blame them? Without his powers Alex would have been nothing. A twig waiting to be snapped. Useless and weak. But he wasn't without his powers, and when they went too far, that raging fire within him snapped again. For those brief few moments, he was in control. He was strong and everyone feared him. He went willingly to solitary. He was a monster. Dangerous to everyone around him. At least there, no one else could get hurt.
The third time, it was pride, not rage, that became Alex's downfall. Sitting in that room with other young mutants. People like him. It had felt good to laugh and joke with people again. The last thing he wanted was to use his powers around them. Every time he had used them, bad things had happened. Terrible things. But they egged him on, and he caved eventually. Didn't want to look like a coward or a fool. When he sliced through the statue, fire and destruction left in the wake of his blasts, the last thing he had expected was for them to cheer. It was the first time he had not considered his powers to be a curse.
Perhaps it wasn't really pride, though. He hadn't wanted any part in it, when Darwin had told him the plan. He didn't want to get involved. He knew it was going to be bad news. But he did it anyway, trusting Darwin's ability to protect himself and Angel from the dangerous rings. He trusted Darwin. Maybe that was why he had followed through on cue. And when his attack was on target, there had been such a rush. It only lasted the blink of an eye, but in that short moment, he had been on top of the world. Using his power to make good things happen. To protect his friends. To make the bad guys pay. Then just as quickly, that moment was smashed into dread as Shaw absorbed the very attack meant to stop him.
Those moments were burned into his mind. Shaw's words as he turned Alex's power on Darwin. Darwin's hand reaching out to him as his body struggled to adapt. The look in his eyes just before they hardened over, and then he was gone. There had been a number of occasions since, that Alex found himself jolting into wakefulness with that haunting look on his mind and a curse on his lips. This had been one such night.
With a heavy, broken sigh, Alex leaned forward, running his fingers through his sandy blond hair. No matter what he did, that guilt continued to haunt him. To hover at the back of his mind, even during training. Breaking his concentration, building up and sitting uncomfortably in the pit of his stomach. Even after the time that had passed, he was still having nightmares. He had a feeling Magneto knew. But neither of them were going to bring it up. Alex didn't even know how to begin addressing that problem. Dragging himself out of bed, he pulled his shirt back on and headed out of the room to navigate the halls. He needed to clear his head. Maybe another round of training would help.
